Alicia Smith

Alicia Dawn Smith, CYT – 200 and 300

Alicia has been teaching yoga in Kalamazoo and surrounding communities since 2007. Fifteen years ago, she began her yogic journey with a little book in her childhood dining room. Since then, yoga has landed her once in India, to learn deep relaxation, and a 300 hour Yoga Teaching Certification. And has fueled countless trips to Grand Rapids to study alignment at From The Heart Yoga, her home away from Kalamazoo, where she earned another 200 hour Certificate for teaching yoga. Currently, Alicia loves to teach alignment and relaxation and living from the heart.

By offering alignment, she hopes her students will learn to be strong and free and powerful and brave. Being passionate about relaxation, she uses it in her classes to help her students learn to relax themselves on their own. Alicia is aware this beautiful world calls us to wear many hats. Her aim is to provide her students with knowledge that will help them relax when relaxation is necessary, and to engage with the world when engagement is necessary. These skills have led her into fulfilling, satisfying life. It is from that place that she is called to share.

Class Descriptions-
FUNdamentals of Allignment-

In these alignment based Hatha yoga classes and workshops, we will explore detailed ways to activate our bodies within poses to gain optimal strength, articulation, flexibility and balance. Workshops and Classes are peppered with yogic philosophy The Bhagavad Gita, Pranayama and Meditation will be present in some form in the framework of each class, as well as a guided Shavasana. Sometimes we will chant together. Sometimes Alicia will sing Sanskrit to you. In class, we will break down poses, use props, work together with partners or in groups, all to deepen our understanding of the key elements of alignment. Questions are welcome and encouraged. The aim of each class is to help you to engage with the world when the world calls you into action, and to teach you to relax, so you can rest when your world gives you space to relax.

Prenatal
Prenatal yoga is an ideal way to support your body, mind, and well-being during pregnancy.  Work with postures to improve balance and circulation, tone and strengthen muscles, and ease into the changes that are taking place.  A weekly yoga practice allows you to keep tabs on your body week by week and helps alleviate some of the common discomforts and stresses of pregnancy.  Part of class is devoted to breathing techniques and relaxation, empowering you with useful tools to stay focused and calm during labor and on into motherhood!  With an aim to amplify and nurture that glow- the natural beauty that shines so brightly when a woman is carrying a child- and intentionally embrace this sacred experience within a safe and supportive community.  This 6 week semester class brings together pregnant women of all ages and stages; please consult your physician or midwife before beginning prenatal yoga.
